One press of a button and you can end your life with a swift injection of potassium chloride. That is the boast of Roger Kusch, once one of Germany’s most promising conservative politicians and now the improbable promoter of a mercy-killing machine.
If the “Perfusor”, designed to sidestep strict laws banning assisted suicide, goes into production then Germany rather than Switzerland could soon become the destination of choice for those seeking to kill themselves.
Some 700 patients, including several terminally ill Britons, have travelled to Zurich where the self-help organisation Dignitas arranges suicide. Assisted suicide has been legal in Switzerland since 1942 providing a doctor has been consulted and the patient is aware of the consequences of his decision.
A Royal Marine in southern Afghanistan threw himself onto an exploding grenade to save the lives of his patrol.
Miraculously, Lance Corporal Matt Croucher, a marine reservist from Birmingham, survived the blast with little injury when his rucksack and body armour took the force of the blast. He is expected to receive one of the highest awards for gallantry.
The story of his courage emerged last week in interviews with marines occupying a forward operating base near Sangin in Helmand province. They are preparing to leave after serving for six months at the centre of some of the fiercest fighting in Afghanistan. The outpost, Forward Operating Base Inkerman, is better known to troops as “FOB Incoming”.
Judge imposes 60-day sentence to be served on weekends
A man who claimed to be acting out of “curiosity” when he asked seven different women to kick him in the groin was sentenced yesterday to 60 days in jail. “I cannot be satisfied that you do not presently pose a risk to the community,” Justice Bruce Frazer told 28-year-old Jarrett Loft, who had pleaded guilty to one count of mischief to property. The judge allowed Loft to serve his sentence on weekends so he does not lose his machinist job.
Court had heard on seven different occasions last April and May Loft approached women using trails in city parks and asked them to kick him in the groin. One of the women, afraid of what the man might do if she refused, kicked him repeatedly. Loft, an Oshawa native who moved to Guelph several years ago, thanked her and left on his bike.
A woman was beaten up and shot dead by her father for talking online with a man she met on the website Facebook. The case was reported on a Saudi Arabian news site as an example of the “strife” the social networking site is causing in the Islamic nation.
It said the man shot his daugther after discovering she had been chatting online to a young man she had met on Facebook. “Security sources assured Al-Arabiya.net that the father beat up his daughter and then shot her dead,” it said.
A leading Saudi preacher told Al-Arabiya.net that Facebook was a “door to lust” for women and called for it to be blocked to prevent social “strife”. Sheikh Ali al-Maliki said women were posting “revealing pictures” and “behaving badly” on the site, which has become popular with young Saudis.
Internet engineers said that young Saudis were using Facebook to flirt and make “web-cam calls”.
SANTA ROSA - A boy in his mid-teens learned Wednesday afternoon that it is not a good idea to try to rob a former U.S. Marine at knifepoint, even if the former Marine is 84 years old, police said today. Santa Rosa police Sgt. Steve Bair said that’s what happened around 2 p.m. in the 1600 block of Fourth Street. The elderly man was walking with a grocery bag in each arm when the boy approached him with a large knife, Bair said.
The boy said, “Old man, give me your wallet or I’ll cut you,” Bair said. The man told the boy he was a former Marine who fought in three wars and had been threatened with knives and bayonets, Bair said.
The man then put his bags on the ground and told the boy that if he stepped closer he would be sorry. When the boy stepped closer, the man kicked him in the groin, knocking him to the sidewalk, Bair said. The ex-Marine picked up his grocery bags and walked home, leaving the boy doubled over, Bair said.
BELLEVUE, OH — A man in central Ohio is accused of having sex with his picnic table.
The investigation began when a tipster gave police three DVDs showing Arthur Price having sexual intercourse with a metal round table on his deck. The incidents occurred between January and March 2008.
Police say the DVDs show Price involved in a sex act in his bedroom. He walks out to his deck, tilts the table on its side and has sex with it.
Police say Price lives near an elementary school. Price admitted that he had sex with the picnic table when police questioned him.
He confirmed to police the incidents caught on the DVDs and said he had also had sex with the table inside the home. Price faces four counts of public indecency. He is free on a $20,000 bond.
Bangalore: A small aircraft of Kingfisher Airlines with 29 people on board on a flight to Hyderabad was involved in an accident on the runway at the airport on Thursday night shortly before take-off, leaving two passengers injured.
The planes nosewheel was damaged after it hit a dog that strayed into the area and since the canine got entangled in the nosewheel, the pilot applied the brake, jamming the landing gear of the ATR aircraft afterwhich the aircraft slid on the runway on its belly. All passengers of the IT 2427 flight were evacuated from the turb-prop ATR plane afterward.
An Airlines spokesman said the aircraft hit a dog on the runway leading to the collapse of its nose wheel. As the pilot applied the brake, the landing gear collapsed, leaving the plane stranded, official sources said.
Bangalore Airport Director Narendra Kaushal said two persons suffered minor injuries and all the 29 passengers were moved out of the plane.
He said the aircraft came to a stand still due to the nosewheel collapse. “It was not a crash landing”, he told PTI.
Kaushal said as the runway was blocked by the stranded plane on the runway, movement of flights in and out of Bangalore came to a complete halt and it would take some time to get it cleared for resumption of flights.
Efforts were on to tow the aircraft from the runway. A spokesmen of the Kingfisher Airline described the incident as an “aborted take-off”.
Blondes may have more fun but redheads have more sex, according to new research in Germany.
The study by Hamburg Sex Researcher Professor Dr Werner Habermehl looked at the sex lives of hundreds of German women and compared them with their hair colour.
He said: “The sex lives of women with red hair were clearly more active than those with other hair colour, with more partners and having sex more often than the average. The research shows that the fiery redhead certainly lives up to her reputation.”
He added that women who dyed their hair red from another colour were signalling they were looking for a partner, and added: “Even women in a fixed relationship are letting their partners know they are unhappy if they dye their hair red. They are saying that they are looking for something better.”
Psychologist Christine Baumanns said however that it may not be the women who were to blame for the better sex lives of redheads.
She said: “Red stands for passion and when a man sees a redhead he will think he is dealing with a woman who won’t mess around, and gets straight to the point when it comes to sex.”
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.
An 11-year-old Orange County elementary student was tasered at school Thursday morning after police say she tried pushing another student into traffic.
It happened at Moss Elementary. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says a student witnessed the 11-year-female student pushing another student into on coming traffic and told a teacher.
Investigators say the teacher approached the student in an attempt to speak with her but the student ignored the teacher and walked to her homeroom class. The student homeroom teacher and music teacher both spoke to the student about her behavior and she became agitated, shoved a desk and chair, started yelling and made several attempts to spit at the teachers. The teachers then called the school’s resource officer, Donna Hudepohl, to the classroom to help remove the girl.
Officials say when officer Hudepohl arrived she asked the student to go with her to the office and she refused, pushed Hudepohl, and then punched her in the face, causing her nose to bleed.
Deputy Hudepohl attempted to secure the student however but the student continued to fight so Officer Hudepohl then tasered the girl.
Officer Hudepohl was transported to Florida East with a possible broken nose. The student was also transported to Florida East to have the prongs from the taser removed. She had no other injuries.
The student has was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, disrupting a school function as well as resisting with violence and is being held at the Juvenile Detention Center.
